CHARACTER
NAME: Gen Asagiri
CANON: Dr. Stone
CANON POINT: current canon (chapter 122 as I write this - they're on the "treasure island" and trying to figure out a way to get the petrification weapon)
AGE: 21
BACKGROUND: Wiki profile

PERSONALITY: The chapter where Gen is introduced is titled "The Smooth Talker" and that tells you a large portion of what you need to know about him. Lying and telling people what they want is second nature to him and he does it without boundaries. One time, he makes such a ridiculous claim about the power of their weapons that Senku says, "There's fibbing, and then there's what you do."

In the pre-Stone World, he worked as a mentalist, even appearing on television. In a flashback, other characters talk about one of the psychology tests published in his book Magic Psychology. However, rather than having any true psychic abilities or magic powers, he calls on keen observation skills and knowledge of psychology, along with a healthy dose of sleight of hand and other magician's tricks.

His mentalist bag of tricks also makes him an expert at manipulating people. He observes what people want and what incentives are likely to sway them. As their group works on their first agricultural endeavors, he calls a straw hat a crown for the food king, the best one at making wheat fields. It's meant specifically to get Magma and Yo to work harder and compete with each other because he understands they're both motivated by being thought of as the best and will strive for titles like "food king" that represent being on top. He can also turn an entire group to a certain way of thinking. When they realize they need to make a boat, Gen tells the combined kingdoms there will be a boat design contest. It’s obvious Senku will have the best design, but he explains a contest will let them feel like they made the choice instead of the final plan being imposed on them.

Gen has a flair for the dramatic, perhaps because of the showmanship needed to perform as a mentalist. He almost seems to enjoy giving himself up when he gets caught in a lie, or when he's simply ready to reveal his true intentions. When he first appears, he blends in with the crowd enjoying a meal. He might have been able to slip away and continue observing the villagers on his mission to find out if Senku is still alive for Tsukasa. However, he makes a point of saying the food would be good with a cola, something only a person from Senku's era would know about. Instantly, he has their attention, right at the moment he wants it.

He's always prepared and planning ahead. For his first visit to Ishigami village, he covers his body with blood packets so if he's attacked, he will look more injured than he actually is. When the villagers celebrate after the tournament, he refrains from drinking alcohol because he doesn't want it to affect his judgment. Throughout the series, he regularly provides commentary in the background. Sometimes it's for narration purposes or to set up a gag, but it also shows how he's constantly watching, always gaining new information about his surroundings.

However, he doesn't always need careful preparation because he's also a quick thinker. With only a few seconds to act before he'll be in danger, he damages an enemy's spear so the blade will fall off when force is applied by pretending to be curious about the spear's construction. When Kohaku is under attack and yells out to the boat that they need the lab, a secret message to anyone who might remain on the ship, Gen steps in and pretends Senku is named Lab and Kohaku is just a jealous girlfriend. Her attacker abandons the fight.

At the beginning of the series, Gen appears to be a purely opportunistic person. He blatantly says things like, "I always bet on the winning horse no matter whom I have to cut loose!" and "I don't hold any hard-and-fast policies. I'm just the world's smoothest talker," and only seems to choose Senku's side over Tsukasa's because of what he will gain from it. As the story progresses, though, he proves to be a truly loyal member of the Kingdom of Science, and any statements otherwise are part of his act and to keep up appearances, like claiming he's only joining their sea voyage for his own profit when he's admitted in inner monologue that he threw in his lot with Senku a long time ago and seems ready to follow him to the end.

In contrast to his stated stance of always looking out for himself, Gen shows the capacity for being caring towards his friends. He plans a birthday surprise for Senku (while acting shady and creepy the whole time), and even this requires his mentalist tricks. He figures out Senku's birthday by mentioning how he doesn't even know how old he is at this point to get Senku to tell him exactly how many days he's been alive. He then adds that to the date Senku broke out of the stone, a bit of information carved in a cave Gen took note of before he even met him.

Gen's contradictory caring attitude isn't only reserved for those close to him. Saying he plays the part of a pragmatist but he's weak, Gen won't let Magma destroy any of the still petrified statues that could be revived into living people, even after admitting it's their best option. He claims that a plan to trick Tsukasa's kingdom will send both he and Senku straight to hell. Although also probably another example of his flair for the dramatic, there is a more realistic threat that if they fail, Tsukasa will come after the two them first. He still goes ahead with the plan for the greater good.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Gen doesn't have any supernatural powers or abilities. His basic abilities were either developed for or led to his former career as a mentalist - enhanced powers of observation and knowledge of human psychology which lead to an affinity for negotiation and persuasion, magician skills like slight of hand, and an ability to mimic voices.

INVENTORY: A bottle of cola like Senku made for him, a deck of cards, and a copy of his Magic Psychology book

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
